Psychology uses a wide range of terms that describe human behavior, emotions, thinking, and mental processes. Understanding these terms helps people become more aware of their own state, analyze the behavior of others, and manage stress, motivation, and emotional well-being more effectively. Many psychological concepts are also widely used in everyday life, business, and education because they explain how the human mind works.

One of the basic terms is stress. Stress is the body’s response to external or internal stimuli that are perceived as a threat or overload. It can be short-term (for example, before an exam) or chronic, when a person remains in a constant state of tension. Chronic stress negatively affects health, concentration, and emotional balance.

Another important concept is burnout. This is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, especially in work or study environments. The term anxiety refers to an internal state of worry or fear that can arise even without a real threat. Anxiety is often connected to excessive thinking about the future and expecting negative outcomes. When it becomes constant, it can significantly affect quality of life.

Another important term is motivation. It is the internal or external force that drives a person to act. It can be intrinsic (when a person does something out of interest or enjoyment) or extrinsic (when driven by rewards or pressure). Understanding motivation helps improve goal achievement and maintain productivity.

The concept of self-esteem describes how a person perceives their own value and abilities. High self-esteem supports confident decision-making, while low self-esteem can lead to doubt, fear of mistakes, and dependence on others’ opinions.

Another important term is cognitive distortions. These are systematic thinking errors that affect how reality is perceived. For example, a person may exaggerate negative events or ignore positive ones. Such distortions are often a cause of anxiety and stress.

Overall, psychological terms help better understand internal human processes and explain why we think, feel, and behave in certain ways. Learning them is a useful tool for self-development, improving emotional well-being, and living a more conscious life.
